Intro to InDesign 2024 – Pages, Palettes and Layers

  • I can use the tools InDesign to draw colored shapes, create and modify layers and arrange objects with layers so I can effectively add and arrange shapes in my documents.

Assignment:

  1. Follow along with the in-class demonstration, or watch the videos in the Links section above.
  2. Produce a new Letter size (8.5 inch x 11 inch) document.
  3. Draw a single large rectangle that covers the entire page and place it on the first layer (Layer 1). Lock this layer to make it the background.
  4. Use the Layers Palette to create a new layer (Layer 2).
  5. Draw five (5) different shapes with a different colored stroke and fill, placed on this new layer (Layer 2).
  6. When your document meets all the requirements, save it as “YOUR NAME – InDesign Week 2”
  7. We will continue working on this document tomorrow, and and turn it in by end of class on Friday, September 1st.

Welcome to our Adobe InDesign unit! Adobe InDesign is the industry-standard software for page layout. It’s what professionals use to produce all kinds of online and hardcopy publications. Today we will begin learning about the Adobe software suite, and the properties of the InDesign page layout software.  

Objective:

  • I can identify and effectively use the Toolbar, Control Panels and default Palettes in InDesign to produce and modify shapes and photo frames so I can place a picture into a photo frame using multiple techniques.

Assignment:

  1. Follow along with the in-class demonstration, or watch the attached videos under the Links header.
  2. Produce a new InDesign document featuring the following:
    1. At least (1) one picture of you
    2. Four (4) pictures of anything else (school appropriate!)
    3. Your name in 24pt type or larger
    4. One (1) text frame per picture, in 10pt type, explaining what the picture means to you (captions)
  3. Save the file as “Your Name – InDesign Day 1.indd”, upload the completed file to today’s assignment post in Google Classroom, and click the “Hand in” button to turn the document in by tomorrow, Wednesday, August 21st.
