Topics Discussed:

  • InDesign Page Layout
  • Horizontal Width
  • Vertical Width
  • Document Grid
  • Snap to Grid
  • Margins and Columns
  • Principles of Design (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity)

Assignment:

  1. Open “El Torito Banner Instructions” for the assignment instructions.
  2. See the document entitled “El Torito Ad Rubric” for the exact criteria under which this assignment will be graded. Make sure you have all the elements in the “4” column to ensure you get the highest grade possible!
  3. Remember the Principles of Design (C.R.A.P.): Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity, and let them guide all your decisions as you build this banner! Remember to create a strong focal point, and a strong eyeflow using all of the principles! Think about what combination of words (information mcnuggets) and images would get your attention and get you to buy meat and seafood at this store!
  4. When you are satisfied that your page layout meets all the assignment requirements, save it with your name in the filename.
  5. EXPORT YOUR FILE TO PDF FORMAT! Export the file as a High Quality Print format .PDF (File -> Adobe PDF Presets -> High Quality Print) and save the resulting .PDF file to the “El Torito Banner Project 2024” assignment in Google Classroom by the end of the day on Thursday, September 19th. Note: If you do this correctly, you do not need to turn in the .indd file or your images!
  6. On Friday the 20th, we will do an online reflection writing activity in our Google Classroom that will ask how you used the Principles of Design in this assignment, so make sure you remember your C.R.A.P. (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity)!

  1. Create a new one-page 8.5″ x 11″ (Letter Size) document in InDesign with all the default settings.
  2. Use Images, Text and the Principles of Design (C.R.A.P.) that we studied over the past few days to design a page that lists all four principles, explains what each principle means, and visually demonstrates what each principle looks like.
  3. For each of the four principles (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity), create a new text box and write at least one complete sentence in your own words about what each principle means (as it pertains to design), then use images (or text) to demonstrate what each of the four principles looks like.
  4. Read through the Chapters and Presentations from our previous week’s lessons to review what Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity mean and look like, and create your own images and text on your InDesign document to demonstrate your own idea of what each principle looks like.
  5. Fit all four principles on the same page, and fill the page!
  6. Remember the Principles of Design (C.R.A.P.): Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity, and let them guide all your decisions as you build this page! Remember to create a strong focal point, and a strong eyeflow using the principles!
  7. Save this assignment as “Your Name – CRAP Principles”.
  8. Export the document as a High Quality PDF using the Adobe PDF Presets option, and upload the finished .PDF file to the Assignment Post titled “Applying the Principles of C.R.A.P.” in our Google Classroom page by Friday, September 13th.
