INTRO TO TYPOGRAPHY – SEARCHING FOR TYPE 2024

Today we will begin exploring typography, which is the art of arranging type to make language visible. To fully understand typography, we will explore many different aspects of type, including the history of typography and how it has evolved throughout different time periods and developed in the digital age. In today’s assignment we will discover and investigate four of the major categories of type.


Objective:

  • I can identify and explain the four major categories of typefaces by creating a document that displays and defines all four categories so I can better understand Typography as a technique for communication and as an art form.

Assignment:

  1. Using the web addresses above, find the definitions for each of the following:
    serif type
    sans serif type
    script type
    ornamental/display type
  2. Use InDesign to create a document that introduces and explains each of the above items.
  3. Use a default 8.5″ x 11″ Letter size page.
  4. Include a large headline for each category, and a one sentence explanation of the definition.
  5. Include a sample image to show me what each of the four type categories looks like.
  6. Try to put all of the four on one page!
  7. When you are finished, Export the file as a High Quality Print format .PDF (File -> Adobe PDF Presets -> High Quality Print) and save the resulting .PDF file to the Google Classroom page for this assignment.

DESIGN REFLECTION #2 – EL TORITO BANNER 2024

Objective:

  • I can reflect on the Principles of Design and how effectively they were used in my most recent assignment by answering a brief questionnaire so that I can keep the design concepts we learned fresh and relevant in my mind.

Assignment:

  1. Connect to the Google Classroom site and click on the link to the Google Form at the bottom of the latest post.
  2. Use your completed El Torito banner design to answer the questions in the Google Form. Review your notes on the Principles of Design if you need a refresher on what each principle means.
  3. You must have at least one complete sentence for each question in each prompt, but use as many sentences as you need to complete your short answer.
  4. Please be specific on each question as to what exactly you did on your banner design to represent each of the four principles.
  5. Once you have answered all the questions, click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. Do not click any other buttons or navigate away from the page before submitting your answers, or they may be erased. You may even wish to type your answers in a Google Doc or Word Document and then transfer them to the form.
  6. Once you have submitted your form, return to the Google Classroom assignment post, and click the Mark as Done button to mark this assignment as completed and ready for grading.
