THE PRINCIPLES OF C.R.A.P. FALL 2025: APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES

Objective:

Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of design by designing a flyer explaining what each principle means and visually demonstrating what each principle looks like, so they can better understand and recognize what each principle looks like when it is used effectively.

Topics Discussed:

  • InDesign Page Layout
  • Horizontal Width
  • Vertical Width
  • Margins and Columns
  • Principles of Design (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment & Proximity)

Assignment:

  1. Create a new one-page 8.5″ x 11″ (Letter Size) document in InDesign with all the default settings.
  2. Use Images, Text and the Principles of Design (C.R.A.P.) that we studied over the past few days to design a page that lists all four principles, explains what each principle means, and visually demonstrates what each principle looks like.
  3. For each of the four principles (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity), create a new text box and write at least one complete sentence in your own words about what each principle means (as it pertains to design), then use images (or text) to demonstrate what each of the four principles looks like.
  4. Read through the Chapters and Presentations from our previous week’s lessons to review what Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity mean and look like, and create your own images and text on your InDesign document to demonstrate your own idea of what each principle looks like.
  5. Fit all four principles on the same page, and fill the page!
  6. Remember the Principles of Design (C.R.A.P.): Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity, and let them guide all your decisions as you build this page! Remember to create a strong focal point, and a strong eyeflow using the principles!
  7. Save this assignment as “Your Name – CRAP Principles”.
  8. Export the document as a High Quality PDF using the Adobe PDF Presets option, and upload the finished .PDF file to the Assignment Post titled “Applying the Principles of C.R.A.P.” in our Google Classroom page by Friday, September 12th.

Assignment:

  1. Connect to the Google Classroom site and click on the link to the Google Doc at the bottom of the latest post.
  2. Use your completed Student Profile design to answer the questions in the Google Doc. If you have not yet completed the Student Profile project, please use this time to complete the project and turn it in before you return to this reflection activity.
  3. You must have at least one complete sentence for each question in each prompt, but use as many sentences as you need to complete your short answer. Please use academic writing style in your responses (proper English and grammar, complete sentences, no abbreviations, “textspeak” or emojis).
  4. Once you have answered all the questions, click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. Do not click any other buttons or navigate away from the page before submitting your answers, or they may be erased. You may even wish to type your answers in a Google Doc or Word Document and then transfer them to the form.
  5. Once you have submitted your form, return to the Google Classroom assignment post, and click the Mark as Done button to mark this assignment as completed and ready for grading.
  6. When you have completed this reflection, you may use any remaining time in the class period to work on other assignments, or to complete work for other classes. Good luck, and thank you for sharing this moment of quiet reflection.
