Spring 2014 – Logo Design Step 2 – Research

Objective: To continue the logo design process by conducting research on the client and collecting it in a research document.

Student Friendly Learning Target: I can use online and offline resources to conduct research on the Falcon Robotics team.

  • Eight Step Logo Design Process:
    • Step 2 – Research

Assignment:

Step 2 – Research

Use the web to research other student robotics teams and Robotics organizations to get an idea of what robotics competition is all about. Use the following websites to get a better understanding of student robotics organizations in Arizona and nationwide:

FIRST Robotics Competition

Arizona FIRST LEGO League

Feel free to expand your web search to gather as much information as you can on our own Falcon Robotics team to aid you in your design decisions.

To record what you have learned in your research, open a new Illustrator Web document and write ten facts that you have discovered about the Falcon Robotics team, or about student robotics in general. Please use complete sentences, and save your work before the end of class. Hang on to this document, as we will be using it tomorrow during the Visual Research phase of our Logo Design process.

Spring 2014 – Logo Design Step 1 – The Design Brief

Objective: To begin the logo design process by producing a basic Design Brief document.

Student Friendly Learning Target: I can begin my Design Brief by writing ten open-ended questions to be answered by the client.

Topics Discussed:

  • Eight Step Logo Design Process:
    1. The Brief

Assignment:

Today we will begin working on our logo design for an actual client here on campus. The client is our own Falcon Robotics Team 842, and as of today every student designer in my classes is in competition to produce a logo that Falcon Robotics will select as their own. In the next two weeks, you will work through the eight step process to produce a professional-looking logo for the Robotics team. After Spring Break, Falcon Robotics representatives will look at all the finished logos, and choose one as their favorite. The winner of this logo design contest will receive a great deal of recognition (as the very popular Falcon Robotics team will be using it as their logo), as well as a yet-to-be-determined prize, so do your best to write open-ended questions that will help you determine what Falcon Robotics wants and that will allow you to give them what they are asking for.

Step 1 – The Design Brief

You will begin the logo design process by creating a new Illustrator document, and writing ten questions (in complete sentences) that you would like to ask the Falcon Robotics team about what they would like to see in their logo. These should be open-ended questions (questions that do not have a yes or no answer). Try to ask questions that will help you understand what the Robotics team wants in a logo, and that will help you produce something that they will want and increase your chances of winning the logo design competition. We will turn these questions in to folder “32 – Logo Design Brief” on Monday.

Your ten questions will be submitted to the Robotics team. A Robotics team member will answer them to the best of their ability, and they will be returned to you to guide you in your design process.
