ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR – INTRODUCTION TO ILLUSTRATOR – SPRING 2023

Happy New Year, and Welcome to Adobe Illustrator!

Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard vector graphics drawing program, and my personal favorite application in the Adobe Suite. We are going to spend the next couple of weeks getting comfortable with the program and exploring its capabilities. We are also going to explore color theory, symbolism and expressive typography in the weeks to come, so prepare yourself with the following week’s exercises!

Let’s get started with a quick test to see what you already know about Illustrator, and a little bit about what you have to discover about the beauty and power of vector graphics.

Then we’ll begin our journey by exploring the Illustrator workspace, and learning about some of the new tools, palettes and control panels that are unique to vector art rendering.

Objective:

I can show what I already know about Adobe Illustrator by taking the Illustrator pre-test.

Video Link:

  • None.

Topics Discussed:

  • For a complete list of Topics Discussed, please see the previous lessons.

Assignment:

  • Now that you’ve brainstormed your character and determined his/her/its key character traits, you will finalize the visual design of the character.
  • Add a Landscape Illustrator artboard to your existing document where you answered the character questions on Wednesday.
  • Using your character analysis answers and your rough sketches as a guide, begin drawing your character in Illustrator.
  • Begin by drawing a front view of your character. Use simple shapes to draw the character’s arms, legs, body, head and any other elements of the character’s design (ears, tail, clothing, etc.).
  • Draw the character with arms and legs spread out (this will aid you when we begin applying animations to this character at a later date.
  • Continue by drawing the character from the side, using simple shapes to create a side view.
  • Finish by drawing the character from behind, with arms and legs similarly spread out as in the front view.
  • Place the full text of your character’s descriptive paragraph on the same page. Remember your principles of C.R.A.P. as you do this, and make it look neat and professional.
  • Your finished model sheet with the front character view and descriptive paragraph are due at the end of class next Friday. (04/29/22)
